Twitter is an app of the woke. A user can post short tweets, upto 140 charactersTwitter has become increasingly popular with academics as well as students, policymakers, politicians and the general public. Many users struggled to understand what Twitter is and how they could use it, but it has now become the social media platform of choice for many.
The snappy nature of tweets means that Twitter is widely used by smartphone users who don’t want to read long content items on-screen.
Now, Twitter has launched it’s new feature ‘Fleets’. Similar to Instagram stories, the tweets will disappear after 24 hours of posting. Fleets cannot be liked, retweeted or commented on. The users can post all; texts, images or videos.
So why introduce such a feature on an app solely made to express ideas, thoughts and opinions? The idea behind Fleets is to help users who aren’t as comfortable with sharing their opinions for a permanent time. Twitter wants it’s users to feel less pressurized about getting likes and retweets.
People have mixed reactions to the feature. While some users appreciate the thought behind it, others aren’t that thrilled. They believe Twitter is meant to talk about serious issues related to the latest news, political views, etc. and now it will be used to share pictures and videos just like Instagram taking away the essence of the platform.
The feature is still in it’s trial phases in India, so let’s wait and see what impact it creates in the long run.
